Photo Manip Tutorial using Microsoft Paint & Photo Edito
« on: Fri, Apr 21, 2006, 03:50 PM »
Hello all
I'm pretty nervous about putting up this step by step  (and this is how I do it, knowing full well there is more than one kind of way to do this) tutorial using simple Microsoft Paint which should be an already installed program in the Accessories grouping next to the Notepad and Calculator.
I am also using another program, perhaps you also may have it....*MS Photo Editor (MSPE)*. I am using both, switching back and forth for certain tools and features. Hopefully you have both, or maybe even better programs on your Mac or with Photoshop. Good Luck.

1. Make sure you find some good Riddick JPEGS or Bitmaps and some other fun images--maybe save them all in a folder.
2. Open the pitctures you want into MS Paint and then make a NEW FILE WINDOW in MS Paint that will be the canvas for all the images to sit side by side as you manipulate them onto and around Riddick.
3. Make sure this new canvas has its own file name. I use many file names, and I change file names, and SAVE files often so that if I screw up, I can go back in time to the other files and take another route.

Here is my canvas. Riddick with Balloon Animals. Notice the nice gals who so generously provide me with the balloons. Notice how I have 2 copies of each picture so that IN CASE I SCREW UP...  I delete the nice gals using the CUT function and the ERASER

Now, the hat should fit Riddick's head but his head is tilted
SO
I open up MS Photo Editor that has 2 really great functions. IMAGE ROTATE and IMAGE RESIZE

I make a new canvas in MSPE and just cut and paste in the HAT only

Notice How I took the hat and rotated and sized it. I want it to look natural on Riddick's head.
BY THE WAY... see the fuzzyness around the large hat... That has to come out (they are contaminated pixels) use the Eraser later.

Once I've got the hat in the right direction, I cut and paste the better hat back onto my original working canvas in MS Paint

ALSO, both MS programs have the wonderful function of EDIT UNDO...so that the last task you did but screwed up can be brought back to normal.
I use it a lot. WHEW

Using VIEW ZOOM LARGE SIZE       (Using Microsoft Paint here)

I go around the Pink Octopus carefully --giving it a close shave with the ERASER, deleting the backgound and leaving only the balloon
This will help it really look like Riddick is holding a real balloon

You can make the ERASER 4 different sizes...really small to fit in the little cracks, Really big to clean up the general outside of the image

Now I see how the hat is gonna look.

I use the SELECT SQUARE to Lassoo a square around the hat and I drag it over to Riddick's noggin.
The first image is WRONG because I used Select + Background, so I get the entire square

The Top Cylinder,Ball,Square function was selected. What I want is the Bottom Cylinder,Ball,Square function that will only
give me to colored image--the Hat

OPPS..Looks like I didn't shave off those pesky Pixels around the hat enough. I go back around the hat with an eraser. More carefully.
Each time I Lassoo the hat and drag it over to Riddick's head. The image will tell me where I need to keep erasing and I keep erasing until I have only the image of the Hat and Riddick.

Thus the 3rd image is pretty good.
Looks like I also have to Resize and Rotate and Clean up the Octopus. I doesn't look right yet.

Boy that Octopus was hard, maybe not the best choice but it got rotated and shifted into Riddick's hands

Now we just need to fix Riddick's hands and face, and fix the Octopus so that they all look complete and together.

OK Did you see the movie Face Off??  Great movie by the way.

Take Riddicks face and hands and because they will be in front of the balloon,
USE the STAR shaped button and trace around his face, then drag it over the final picture and Drop it.
Make sure the pixels are aligned. I like to use eyebrows and other obvious markings to align my image before I drop it.

I also scavenged pieces from the other Octopus images. The Octopus needed a better head, so I made one.

Tricky sneaky octopus
More rotating and cutting and clicking and dragging using the STAR Select function
in order for the octopus to have more and better arms.

Almost done

Now down to tweaking the final product

Using the VIEW ZOOM LARGE SIZE function, I can really see the little white specks (pixels) and places where there are gaps
Using the EYE DROPPER BUTTON I can click on a color on the Riddick image and Pick Up the background color
Then I can use the PENCIL BUTTON or the PAINT BRUSH BUTTON to paint into the white specks and color in the white specks.
Keep using the EYE DROPPER BUTTON to constantly change colors to match the background I do a SEARCH AND DESTROY of
all white specks.
I shift between NORMAL VIEW and ZOOM LARGE VIEW so that I can check my progress.

I cut all the extra images and size down the WHITE canvas by grabbing the edges and dragging them back in to frame the actual image.
I of course save the file.

Now, another great thing about MS Photo Editor is that it has the Spoon Full of Sugar button
Called  TOOLS SMUDGE

Just select this function and then I click and drag/wipe around the rough spots. It wiggles the pixels ever so slightly so that things blend/smudge into each other. I like it a lot.

I like this picture, now that it is done.  You may laugh at my verbose, time consuming, antiquated, redundant description of my work, but I'm just happy that I don't have to spring for Photoshop, as much as I like that program. Good Luck to all, and keep those pictures coming.
CHEERS.  And don't forget to read and write more Spring Break Fanfics. They are a scream!  :laughter
