Fanfiction and Girl Geek Con
« on: Mon, Oct 21, 2013, 10:17 PM »
I got to talk to Jane Espenson.  As per usual, she was awesome. She wrote scripts for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Buffy, Angel, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, Once Upon A Time, blah blah blah.  Anyhoo.  At a panel about "The Mary Sue," she commented that "Writing scripts is exactly like writing fan fic."

Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who I adore despite the fact he worked on shows I kinda hate (and a couple I love), said that his character Wendy Watson, from The Middleman (squee) "is me, on my best day, far more attractive, and replies like I would reply if I had time to write replies." He does not have a lot of patience for the condemnation of the Mary Sue.

I also got some great pictures.

Thanks, Silsin!  It was awesome.  I regret I didn't start going years ago.

I love the pictures! Thanks for posting them.

Cool that you got to talk to Epenson. How crowded was the con? Did you have to stand in line a long time? Did you have trouble getting into the panels?

Thanks!  It's a pretty small con, only on its third year.  We've been to all of them.  Something like 4,300 were at this last one (up from 600 for the first one) and I think we waited in two lines all weekend.  We were able to get into all the panels pretty easily.  It's not like Emerald City, where I've been in lines for more than an hour and haven't been able to get into all the panels I wanted too.
