Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright

Sam was in deep trouble.  He didn’t understand what was happening, but something had gone seriously wrong with his life.  Ever since he’d let Melanie convince him to get the damn tattoo.

She usually got what she wanted; “you’re my tiger, do it for me.”  So he’d done some research and found a little old guy with a good reputation in Chinatown.  Now he had an admittedly beautiful, large, full colour tiger climbing up his back from one hip to the opposite shoulder.

The guy was good; the damned thing looked like it was alive. And Melanie loved it.  It had creeped him out at first.  But he was getting used to it.  Too bad they had argued about the price; he would have liked to tell the man what a great job it was.  But the old man had gotten nasty and he had stomped out in a fit of pique.

Except now weird things kept happening... like him blowing up at his boss the other day.  Even more surprising was that Jeffries had backed down and admitted he was probably correct.  Then he’d assigned Sam to look into the situation and said he could have whatever he needed to get it done.

His landlord had wanted the rent on the first, as usual.  Never mind the ten days grace period.  But when she had stepped out in front of him as he sauntered down the hall, he’d just looked at her, annoyed, and she backed into her apartment seeming frightened.  Nobody frightened Mrs Bodley, not even the guys who’d tried to mug her last year.

He was having trouble sleeping, too.  Nightmares and odd dreams that left him exhausted and sweaty.  He actually took a bath the other day... him, who hated the idea of slopping about in a tub.  He’d lain there until the water had cooled, almost falling asleep.

He’d lost weight in the past couple of weeks.  Had these strange urges to eat meat, a lot of it.  Last time he’d taken Melanie out to dinner, he’d ordered the largest cut and blood rare.  She had stared at him like he was a complete stranger.  He rarely ate red meat and always well done.

She sure hadn’t complained when he had fucked her nearly senseless afterward, though.  There was no question about it, either.  He had fucked her, no gentle making love like they were used to. She smelled and tasted delicious and he’d behaved like an animal.

And he was noticing things he never had before.  The way the breeze made things move, sounds he had always ignored or just hadn’t heard, the way stuff smelled.  His vision was actually sharper, he’d given up his reading glasses weeks ago.

But he’d also taken to wandering the streets when he couldn’t sleep.  Alleys and dark lanes, the park. He even woke up curled under a bush twice now.  Fortunately, he’d managed to slink home without being seen.  He’d gorged himself and had to call in sick, then slept the day away.

He’d taken a sudden dislike to anything canine and oddly, they seemed to return the favour.  On his increasingly frequent evening jaunts, he had to cross streets to avoid some nasty confrontations.  Even Frankie from down the block could barely control his normally laid back lab.  Bosco and he had always been friends; he didn’t understand it and neither did the dog’s owner.

Sam tosses and turns in the throes of another vivid dream.  He is brushing through thick stands of bamboo again, tongue lolling in the intense heat.  Time to find a stream and drink; then rest in the cool water before rising.  He is hungry; he needs to hunt.

The man flops to his belly one more time with a tortured moan.  His twisted sheets fall to the floor exposing his back with the beautiful tattoo of the world’s fiercest predator.

Muscles twitch and skin ripples.  The shape fights the motionless ink.  He partially wakes and sobs.

Thinking he’s still dreaming, Sam feels the thing moving, writhing under his skin. There’s a thick tearing sound, like suede ripping, and he screams in sudden agony.  But not for long.  Tigers will eat humans and this one is already wounded; bloody.

It took Melanie several days to convince the police that something had happened to her fiance.  No one had seen Sam since Sunday.  Mrs Bodley did say she’d heard some banging and yelling, but she’d just assumed it was ‘young folks doing what young folks do’, and ignored it.

Everyone realised it was something completely different when she used her key to open his apartment.  The inside of the hall door had deep marks clawed into it and the rest of the place was pretty trashed.  But the worst was Sam’s bedroom.  It had been torn apart and there was blood everywhere.

There was no sign of a body and no drag marks or anything else to indicate one had been removed.  The police were completely at a loss.  The long, ragged tears in the linens, carpet and furniture seemed to show someone in a frenzy, but that made no sense.  The man had no known enemies who would go crazy like this.

Then they found the bloody paw prints.  The detective called in to the case wondered aloud if this could be related to the wild reports of a large tiger wandering the streets of Chinatown they’d received in the last few days.  The cops laughed, disbelieving, but Melanie guessed the truth.

It changed her mind about tattoos, for certain.

Most interesting!

The tattoo was sort of magical?
But Sam didn't change into a tiger, a tiger demon was in him and errupted from his body?

You guessed it, Tib.  He insulted the tattoo artist and the man took his revenge.

Pretty cool story, love it!  Hehe, you come up with the weirdest ideas...lol

Anyway, even though this is a challenge from another website, could you please add the required disclaimer to the top of your post?  Thank you.
