Chapter 1

Lieutenant Grissiom was sitting at his desk, wondering if the Colonial would be able to spare one of his trackers, when Hodges came in caring a piece of paper.

"The relay you've been waiting for has come through,"  Hodges handed him the message as he spoke. "Will the Colonial be sending help?"

"I donno yet, you've just handed me the message." Gris looked at the tall, thin man over his glasses. Hodges was intelligent, but also a suck-up that tended to get on Gris' nerves.  "That will be all." He could see that Hodges was about to speak again, so he thought the best course of action was to send him to "bother"  another member of the team. "I think maybe you should  go check in with Doc and see if he needs another hand with running those test samples."

Hodges wanted to wait and see if the tracker would be coming, and to probe into the roumers that Gris and the man who was only referred to as Colonial went back as far as everyone believed. He knew he was being politely dismissed, and in order to keep his boss from snapping on him, left the room quietly.

Alone again, Gris rubbed his fingers against his forehead. He dreaded reading the message, fearing the worse. It had to be done now if they were going to survive the onslaught of the Freaks currently going on in Vegas. Taking a deep breath, he unfolded the paper and read.

Gil, I was relieved to hear you and your team are still alive in the wastelands. Communications are hard to come by from there, I hope the other teams in Old Vegas still survive as well. We have lost several trackers to the Freaks, but I will send you the best I have here. She was hand picked and trained by me personally. She left here a few hours ago and should be there within four days time. I pray she can help. The western section of the Alliance is depending on it. Good luck old friend.

Removing his glasses, Gris rubbed his hand down his face and sighed. "Mica, if you're sending me who I think you are, The Alliance is in deeper trouble than I thought," he whispered to himself.  He looked at his watch and  realized that it was time for the daily assignment meeting in the cafeteria. Gris gathered up his papers and left his office.

"No, I tell you Gris got a message from the Colonial, I think he's sending a tracker."

Nick Stokes rolled his eyes. "Hodges, you're such an ass kisser. If  we're getting one, I doubt Gris would tell you first."

Before Hodges could reply, Gris entered the room and looked at his team.  Six people made up the night shift on side A for Vegas.

Catherine Brown, whose father had owned some of the casinos when there had been a need for them. She watched the monitors and controlled the barrier that kept the Freaks on the outside, keeping everyone inside the building safe.

Warrick Brown, Catherine's husband. Born and raised in Vegas. He had been 13 when everything went to shit, now he was part of the three man crew that hunted and killed  Freaks.

Nick Stokes, came to Gris when he was 15. Sent by his family in Texas, they had hoped that the Alliance could save what was left of the humans in America. He was the leader of the field team.

Greg Sanders, Nick and Gris had found him on the run when he was 12. He was the gunner for Nick's team.

Doc Robins, the teams medic.

Hodges, annalist, genius and general ass kisser. He had come to the team after most of L. A. had been over run.

"Okay gang, first things first. We  will be getting a tracker, a female Wolfen."

"Man, you've got to be shittin' me. A wolfen."  Nick had heard stories about them, none good.

"You mean they're real? I thought they were a myth." Catherine was definitely curious.

"Nick, relax, she was trained by the Colonial, and no Catherine, they're very real."  Gris knew that Nick wouldn't take the news easily, but hoped that the young man wouldn't fight him on it.

"A fuckin' werewolf....I've give the bitch one shot. That's it." Nick crossed his arms across his chest as he leaned back in his chair, while Warrick fought to keep from laughing at his teammate.

"A werewolf?" Greg was nervous at the idea.

"Not exactly, Greg. In ancient Egypt they were called Anubis. Only in the middle ages did they get the stigma of  monsters, and nearly hunted to extinction. She won't eat any of you." Well, if she's who I think she is, if you piss her off, Nick....she might eat you.

"Personally, I can't wait to examine her. Find out the differences in the genetic make up between the species. I hear they're immune to the plague."  Doc was always open to new options, and the thought of examineing a true Wolfen excieted him.

"I'll make sure she comes to the lab and gives you some blood samples ASAP.  She should be arriving within 24 hours, in time to go out on tomorrow's sweep. Now that that's settled, here are your assignments for tonight....be careful out there guys."

Nick wanted to argue the point further, but the way Gris had closed the meeting told him that his boss was in no mood to hear it tonight. They had to sweep a building a mile away the B team had seen fresh activity in.....Maybe killing Freaks would take his mind off the fact that he would have a freak of a different type on his team tomorrow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jasmin had been running for three days straight and didn't slow down as she passed the battered Las Vegas city limits sign. In her wolfen form she was eight foot tall and could run forever it seemed.....fortunately for her much faster than the Freaks could. She had intended to go straight to the base, but the sight of an old military hummer next to one of the old casinos caught her attention. The human scent was fresh smelling to her, despite of the scent-loc the vehicle had been covered with. Inside the building she could hear gunfire and the sound of dieing Freaks. Even if these weren't her new team mates, they might be able to use another hand.
She worked her way into the back of the building, the scent of the Freaks was everywhere. Cautiously, Jasmin worked her way down the hallway, her night vision revealing that so far it was clear. There was the scent of two human males coming from the front area of the building, while the scent of another male came down the stairs to her right from the second floor.  A crash and cursing had her moving up the stairs growling, ready for a fight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nick had started sweeping the second floor, checking for places to lay explosives, when the deteriorating floor gave way under his feet. He had seen two of the Freaks begin to creep forward to his position as he held onto the edge of the hole. Nick decided that at the last minute he would turn loose and take his chances with the fall. If he was lucky, he would only sprain something and still live to tell about it.

He was about to release his grip when the Freaks froze, screamed and ran off. The thought that Warrick had moved up the stairs was vanished with a deep growl from the darkness. Nick turned his head and peered into amber eyes. 'Take my hand if you want to live.' The voice inside his head said, and he grabbed the paw like hand offered him. With ease, the creature lifted him from the hole and looked down at him.

'Does your communicator still work?'  Jasmin asked him mentally, hoping that it did. She could hear the Freaks were closing in on the lower parts of the building.

Running strictly on his training, Nick checked his wrist device and nodded.

'Tell your team to move out, we're about to be over run, they still have a chance. If we're lucky, we will too.'

Nick had a suspicion that this was the tracker, and despite his reservations about the creature, the safety of his team came first. Quickly he entered a code that meant get out now, that his position was overtaken. He had always dreaded entering that code, but knew Warrick and Greg would leave him without hesitation, knowing that it would only be sent as a last resort.

Downstairs, Greg and Warrick had heard the crash and the screaming, simultaneously they both received Nick's message. Dread filling their hearts, both men fought their way out to the hummer, Greg manning the machine gun/plasma rifle on the back. There would be time for grieving when they were safely in the compound.

Nick turned towards the stairs when Jasmin placed a large paw on his chest, her nose and ears twitching. Smelling the Freaks approaching them, she motioned him down the hallway. Cautiously they worked their way down the hall, Nick had his pistol out ready to fire if need be. He had noticed the two Freaks that had closed in on him were keeping their distance, but still following. Suddenly one let out a high pitched scream, alerting the rest of their location.

Jasmin ran to the window at the end of the hallway and looked out as they both heard the Freaks approaching them. She turned to Nick and smiled. 'You ever play piggy back as a kid?'

"What the hell does that have to do with us gettin' out. They're closing in fast, bitch," he snarled back.

'I'm gonna ignore that comment, for now. Climb on, and hold tight. There's a harness under my fur. We gotta chance, thin one, but a chance.'

Nick now understood her question and climbed onto her back, his hands grabbing the harness straps above her breasts. She smelled of dirt, sweat and musk, but didn't wreak like he thought she would.

Jasmin stood and smashed the window with her forearms before climbing out the window and sinking her claws into the side of the building. Carefully they climbed down reaching the ground faster that her "rider" had expected.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Warrick was pushing the hummer as hard as he dared through Vegas's ruined streets. Greg was still manning the guns, having cut a couple of Freaks in half with the plasma rifle. Warrick saw the compound coming up fast and hit the communicator.
"Cath, open the door now! We're comin' in fast!"
Catherine had been watching the night vision monitor when her husband's voice came came through. Instantly, she opened the barrier just in time for them to pass through.
Once they had parked and entered the elevator, Warrick looked at Greg. He could see the younger man start to unravel. Warrick knew his young friend would have to be sedated to make it through this first night after losing Nick.
Gris and the rest of the team were waiting on them when the door slid open.
"Warrick, what the hell happened out there? Where's Nick?" Gris wanted answers fast.
"We were overrun....he sent the code. There was nothing we could do, man."
Before Gris could ask anymore questions, Greg had reached his breaking point. He set down in one of the chairs and began shaking, grieving uncontrollably. Catherine walked over to him and held him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nick was running as fast as he could with Jasmin jogging behind him, easily keeping up. He could see salvation in front of them and screamed a message into his communicator.

"Catherine, open the fuckin' door! Now!!!"

Catherine looked up in surprise, running to the monitor. The rest of the team crowding in around her. The screen showed Nick and the creature running for their lives.

"Catherine NOW!!!!"

Instantly, she hit the switch allowing them entry.

Gris looked at his team and smirked slightly. "It would appear that our tracker is also a retriever."

Sorry this one is so short, but the story is fixing to pick up. This part was blotchy in the dream so I patched it as well as I could....as well as I could with the upcomming talk between Nick and Jas looming in the horizion.  Mac isn't mine either.  :(  I'd be rich if he were.

Chapter 2

Once inside the elevator, Jasmin went down to one knee in order to fit inside. She was about to ask if her companion if he knew Grissom, when she caught traces of his scent. It was constant enough that she could tell he was regularly inside it. She could feel the man's eyes on her as the elevator went down a level. Whether he was sizing her up or wondering what she looked like as a human, she didn't know and at that moment she didn't care.

The doors opened and Nick walked out with a broad grin on his face. Everyone crowded around him asking if he was okay. Nick laughed and answered them before he turned his attention to Greg. The younger man stood there with tears in his eyes, the look on his face a mixture of relief and grief. He held Greg in his arms, stroking his head and telling him that it was alright. Nick then held his head in both hands and whispered that he was fine before hugging him again.

Jasmin watched the interaction with a mild sense of curiosity until she saw Grissom. Again she went to one knee and bowed her head. Using her mind, she not only spoke to him, but allowed everyone else to hear her as well.

' Lieutenant Grissom.'

"Stand up, Jas. You kneel to no one here, especially me." Gris smiled as she stood. "How is The Colonial?"

'Dad is good, he sends his regards.' At hearing the gasps from a couple of the people in the room, Jasmin decided to cause a few more and shift back to her human self. She stood 5'8", inch long honey blond hair and golden amber eyes.

Nick still had some reservations about having her on the team, and for the moment thought it best to keep silent, until he could get her alone and pump her for deeper information than would be given during the debriefing.

Catherine muttered 'Wow' at the transformation and the nearly angelic face of the woman. Warrick nudged her slightly to draw her attention to Greg who now looked at Jas like a love sick pup.

'My God, she looks just like her mother', Gris thought in amazement. "Everyone in the cafeteria, please."

After everyone had taken their seats, Gris began the introductions, before the serious matter of the survival of the Alliance.

"Gang this is Jasmin....our tracker. Jas this is Warrick and Cathrine, Greg, Hodges, Doc and Nick you've already met."

Jas nodded at each in turn. She could tell that her father was right in sending her to Vegas. Jas hadn't seen a group of people look more haggard since New York.

"Nick, I'll meet with you later to find out what went on out there, but right now I think anything Jas could tell us would be to the team's benefit." Nick nodded slightly as Gris turned the meeting over to the team's newest member.

Jasmin stood as she began the speech that she had so many times before.

"There's a lot I could tell you all off the bat, but I've found that the best way is to let you all ask me any questions that you may have,"

Catherine was the first to speak up. "What of the others? New York?"

"New York is lost, I'm afraid." Jas paused at the look of shock on everyone's faces, a look she had come to expect. "There was a relay in from Mac Taylor, stating that they were being overrun. The subway tunnels were the perfect hideout for the Freaks, and the plague was rampet....humans were reduced to cannibalism." She paused, lowering her eyes, knowing that the next part would be equally hard to hear as it would be for her to say. Jas looked up, ignoring the rage on the men's faces and the tears in Cathrine's eyes. "Mac requested an extermination team."

"You've gotta be shittin' me!" Nick's dark rage filled eyes bore into hers.

"What's an extermination team?" Greg didn't like the sound of it, but had the feeling that it was something that was only used as a last resort.

"It's a fuckin' sweeper team sent in to kill everyone they can find." Nick knew Mac wouldn't ask for one to come in unless it was necessary, but it still didn't sit well with him.

"Not completely," Jas locked eyes with Nick. "The team was instructed to get Mac, his team and anyone else they could get to out....unfortunately it was too late when they arrived. Everyone was lost. After the charges were set in the tunnels....New York's just a hole in the ground now."

"Are you sure? I mean the reports could be wrong." Warrick always tried to hang onto the small hope that they weren't fighting a loosing battle.

"I'm sure. There were five of us sent in...all highly trained Wolfen, two of us made it out. I set the charges myself." Once again she locked eyes with Nick, as she unfastened her harness and lifted her uniform shirt on one side. Long deep scars covered her right side. "This is what Freaks can do to one of my kind, it was not what I wanted to happen."

"The others?" Greg asked quietly, afraid of the answer.

"Miami has been secured, but barely. Seems gators think Freaks make yummy dinners. Chiago is a ghost town, the baseline humans left there months ago....Denver is about the only one that is truly safe, it's the elevation."

Doc had to change the subject in attempt to give the team some small hope. "Have they determined just what the Freaks are?"

"A military project. DNA splicing between humans and sewer rats. A form of super soldier, they hoped." She sighed at the now familiar collective groan that filled the room. "They were released, we're not sure by who, but it was after the plague began."

"I think anything else can wait til later. Catherine would you show Jas where she will be staying?" Gris suddenly felt very old and tired.

"Is there somewhere I can clean up? I've got so much road on me, can't tell where the grim stops and I began."

"Sure, just come with me." Catherine led her out into the hallway.

"I'm sorry about your friends, Catherine...I did my best."

Catherine looked into the eyes of a woman that has seen too much pain and death in her life and whispered, "I know."

Chapter 3

One by one the team exited the room, each consumed with doubts of humanity's survival. As usual Nick was the last to leave the meeting, an old habit forced by always making sure his friends were safe. He was about to exit the room when Gris stopped him.

"Nick, I need to speak with you." Gris watched as his younger friend closed the door and turned to face him. "What's your instincts telling you?"

"She got us out. Might be able to trust her, but the jury's still out on that one." He took a seat across from the older man. "She was part of the sweeper team....if New York fell, what chance do we have?" There was a hint of aggression in his voice.

Gris looked at one of the men he had helped raise, thought for a moment, then slightly arched one eyebrow and smiled. "We don't have any subways." Nick laughed at the remark. Living in the wastelands had given him a twisted sense of humor. "Jas is not only the team's tracker, she's your's as well. When the team splits up during missions, Jas will stay with you. No more Lone Ranger, Nicky Boy."

"Don't like it, man. I said we might be able to trust her, didn't say I did." 'Don't need a baby-sitter, Gris.'

Gris sighed at the other man's words, knowing that sooner or later Nick would have a problem with this. "Sometimes trust can begin through learning about a person's background."

"So, I just go up to her and say, 'Hi Jas, what's your story?' I don't think so." Nick leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest.

"No....she would definitely tell you to fuck off." Gris thought for a moment before realizing the answer was obvious. "Think, Nicky, if you had run for three days and  just been in a fight, what would you want? Besides sleep that is." He leaned forward slightly as he spoke. "Take her a sandwich and beer, then just talk to her. Nothing specific, just talk. I know you can talk to a woman, Nick." Gris watched as a smile tugged at Nick's lips, then became a full blown grin.

"Copy that."

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jas had showered and put on the fresh clothes that Catherine had left for her. Now that she felt human again, she needed fresh air and the stars. She went to the elevator and took it up to the roof. Jas sighed with relief as the winds blew gently across her face while she walked across the roof. Walking past the table and chairs there, she leaned against the railing and looked at the stars.
'I'm so tired. I miss the high country....after this, I'm going home. Forgive me Dad, I just can't do this anymore.' Tears slipped down her cheeks as the desert winds blew them dry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Greg entered the small informal kitchen where Catherine and Warrick was fixing some sandwiches. He smiled and wondered if Jas might be hungry. Greg thought about taking her something to eat, maybe he could talk to her and find out if her full name was as beautiful as she was. Being the youngest member in their odd ball family, Greg was also the shyest. He hoped his nerve would hold out.

Hodges just walked into the kitchen as Greg asked Catherine if it would be okay if he took Jas something to eat.

"Think Nick's beat you to it. Just saw him getting into the elevator with food and beer." Hodges sly grin turned up one slide of his mouth.

"Hodges, tell me again why you left L.A.?" Warrick scolded him for causing the defeated look on Greg's face.

"What did I say?" Hodges was confused as to what he had done wrong, but Warrick's expression kept him quiet.

"Don't worry, Greg," Catherine placed her arm around his shoulders. "Nicky doesn't always get the girl, besides, a few hours is a little too fast even for him."

"Yeah," Warrick gave his young friend a warm smile, "he didn't get Catherine. Just don't give up hope, man."

~~~~~~~~~~
Jas heard the elevator doors open. Turning her head she saw Nick walk out carrying a plate with two thick subs in one hand, and two bottles in the other.
"Hungry?" Nick asked as he set everything down on the small table.
"Starving."  Her stomach growled in agreement as she joined him at the table.
Jas took a moment to really look at Nick as he opened the two beers. His dark hair was just over an inch long, with eyes to match. He had one dark freckle on his lower right cheek, and Jas suspected that if he ever truly smiled there would be dimples. The faint lines around his eyes showed her that he did smile a lot. Nick's overall appearance made Jas think of some of those old movie posters of leading men.
Nick noticed her studying him, and wondered what she was thinking. He decided to let her eat something and see if she would speak first. As bad as he hated to admit it, Jas was a good looking woman. One with an angel's voice. He watched as she took her first bite and the wonder that spread over her face.
"Oh God, this is good," she groaned. "Is this real meat, and fresh vegetables? Oh, Nick, I could fall in love with you." The warm laughter her comments received confirmed Jas' suspicions about the dimples. "What kind is it?"
"Rattlesnake and lizard! " Nick said as he swallowed his own bite. "'Bout the only thing the Freaks don't kill. We guess they can't eat them, or something." He waited for her to look disgusted at what she was really eating, but instead she just hummed and took another bite. "We grow the vegetables here....small hydro garden."
As they finished their food, they talked about the homemade beer they were drinking and enjoyed the breeze coming through the "concrete canyon". Finally Nick's curiosity got the better of him as he wondered about her kind.
"So....do your people have litters or what?" The death look and snarl told him that he had indeed pressed the wrong button. "Whoa," he held up his hands in surrender. "I don't know anything about your kind. Just curious."
Jas could tell that he was sincere and relaxed. "Sorry, when your people go from being worshiped as Gods to being nearly hunted to extinction...you get edgy."
"My bad. I shouldn't have asked it like that."
Jas took the apology with a smile and continued. "Our women have only one child at a time. Twins are extremely rare, and almost never survive. It's one of the few ways we're different from baseline humans." She thought for a moment, then asked a question herself. "So what's with you and Greg? You two cracking each other or somethin'?" If looks could kill, Jas knew the one Nick was giving her would have turned her into a pile of ash. "Just curious. I don't have a problem with it if you are."
"I was eighteen when word came in that there was a family of free-settlers coming in. They were moving at night, trying to avoid the heat, not knowing the Freaks were out there." Nick looked into the distance as he remembered that night. "Gris took me out with him, hoping we'd get to them first. We heard the screams of the man and woman as they were being killed." He paused, taking a drink. "We heard this kid screaming to our right and went for him. One had grabbed him by the arm, and Gris shot the fucker. Greg was twelve then. Gris became his father, Warrick and I are the brothers he never had." He locked eyes with Jas as he spoke next. "When I came back tonight....I didn't see the grown man he'd become, but the terrified twelve year old boy he was."
Understanding the bond between the men, Jas closed her eyes briefly before speaking again.
"When I was about eight, Dad moved me and Mom from the high country to this little settlement. We hadn't been there very long when she came down with the fever."
"She had the plague? I thought you guys were immune." Nick's brows knitted together as he spoke.
"We are... The fever is kinda like your flu, but unique to Wolfen, however the early stages are identical." Jas looked out into the night sky as tears slid down her cheeks. "They took her to the town doctor, while they put us in quarantine." She let out a bitter laugh. "A four by four jail cell. We were locked up in there for six weeks....When they finally let us out, Mom was already gone. Gil nearly lost his mind when he found out." Jas looked down to see Nick had lain one of his hands over hers in support.
"Gris and them were close, huh?"
"You could say that. He and Mom were lovers once."
"You're kiddin' me! Is that possible? I mean...." 'No fuckin' wonder he trusts her.'
"Oh yes, it's possible." This time it was Jas' turn to laugh a little. "The affair lasted several months, from what Dad told me, but they remained close friends. About a month later, Mom came into heat and started looking for a mate."
"Heat? You mean??" The more Nick learned, the more amazed he was and the more he wanted to learn.
Jas smiled at the shocked look on her new friend's face. "Yep. It's just like it sounds. Happens only twice a year, another reason there's not many of my kind left. Anyway, it was a full moon that night when Dad caught her scent up in the high country. They mated and were bonded. It's very romantic for my people." Jas smiled shyly, wondering if she would ever find her mate.
"What's being bonded mean?" Nick was completely caught up in her story, forgetting the fact that Jas was probably exhausted.
"When you first have sex with the person that's your life-mate, whether the woman's in heat or not, the two are bonded. I've asked Dad what that's like, but he couldn't explain it. He said that there was no way to mistake it once it happens. He also said that when it happens, even if one person doesn't want it they have no choice. They can try to fight it, even go away....but they will both start to grieve themselves to death."
"Your Dad had you to fight for, didn't he." Nick looked at the soft shy look in her eyes, letting the desert breeze blow away the rest of any misgivings he might have had earlier.
"Yeah, he did." Jas smiled softly at him.
Quote
"What the hell does that have to do with us gettin' out. They're closing in fast, bitch," he snarled back.
He called her a bitch!!!  That's not nice Mr. Stokes... but i'm guessing it was caused by the stress of the moment...
Quote
"I'm sorry about your friends, Catherine...I did my best."
Catherine looked into the eyes of a woman that has seen too much pain and death in her life and whispered, "I know."
chapter 4
Jas awoke early the next afternoon for her appointment with Doc Robbins. She dressed in the standard black Alliance uniform and checked her harness before laying it on the mid-sized bed. Taking one last look at her sparsely furnished room, Jas stepped out into the hallway. Nick had walked her back here last night, telling her that his room was on her right and Greg's was on the left in case she needed anything.
Sniffing the air in the open hallway, she noticed Greg's scent hung in the air slightly, only a couple hours old. Nick on the other hand could be heard stumbling in his room as he shook off the day's sleep. Walking silently, she followed the medicinal smell down the corridor to the medic station. Doc was waiting on her and to Jas' surprise, Greg was there as well. Both were dressed in lab coats, but Greg's serious face saddened her somewhat. He was in his early twenties, she guessed, but what he had seen in his short life had taken it's toll on him. She wondered if that's what she now looked like.
"You're right on time," Doc's cheery voice warmed the room. "Greg will be assisting me, if you don't mind."
"No, that's ok." Jas smiled at Greg, causing him to blush slightly, softening his looks.
"Sit here," he patted the exam table, "and Greg will take an oral swab for a DNA comparison."
Once she had sat down, Greg swabbed the inside of her cheek then placed it into a plastic tube. She could tell he was slightly nervous, and suspected it was from being so close to one of her kind.
"If you'll remove your shirt, I'd like to take some blood samples and examine those scars more closely."
Without hesitation, Jas stripped down to her one piece bra and held out her left arm. Doc tied the rubber strap above her elbow, swabbed it down and inserted the needle. He filled four viles of blood before placing a bandage over the small puncher wound.  She raised her right arm and placed it over her head as Doc gently palpated the scars.
"These are much more sever that I first thought. This should have eviscerated you. How did you survive?" Doc stood in front of her once more as she lowered her arm. Greg's face went pale at the closer inspection of her scars.
"If I had been human at the time....yeah it would have killed me." Jas closed her eyes for a moment blocking the memories from that day. "Wolfen are much heavier muscled than baseline humans. If the hit had been much harder, I don't think it would have mattered what I was."
"So it only perforated the outer muscle layers?" Greg asked, his medical curiosity overcoming his nervousness.
"Yes, but if I had passed out,"
"Then you would have reverted back to human." Greg finished her statement, a slight boyish smile slipping onto his lips.
"Amazing." Doc was truly fascinated by this new team member. "Greg, take the samples to Hodges and have him work up a DNA profile, then see if he can isolate any plague immunity factor from her blood. And tell him I said to cross check her DNA to see if it might be there as well."
"Right away."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A couple of hours later Warrick, Nick, Greg and Jas were in the Hummer and headed out to the target building from last night. It wasn't quite dark yet so Greg was seated in the back beside Jas, instead of his usual place at the guns.  Warrick stopped close to the entrance so it would be handy in case they had to made a speedy escape. Jas turned to her Wolfen form as she entered the building first, sniffing and listening to every sound.

They had decided during the pre-mission meeting to demo the building, then start sweeping another. The hopes were to salvage any usable buildings for the Alliance's usage, and hopefully one day be homes for free settlers. The team worked it's way through the main floor, following Jas' lead. She scented down one hallway, her ears twitching for the slightest sound before nodding to Warrick and Greg. They left to begin setting charges.

As Nick and her walked down the darkened hallway, he lowered his night vision goggles. They were about to turn a corner when Jas placed a paw on his chest. Inside his head he heard her voice.

'Eyes.'

Nick was confused at first, then he watched as Jas removed a round flash grenade from under her fur and toss it down the hall. Instantly, he shielded his eyes from the blinding light. When he looked back, there were five dead Freaks forty feet away. Jas had informed them at the meeting that flash grenades shorted out the Freaks brain impulses, killing them instantly. Nick smirked at her earning him a light mental, 'Kiss my ass, Stokes.'

Once they had finished laying the charges, the four met outside. Nick tripped the remote detonation, giving them thirty seconds to get out of range from the blast. As the dust cleared, Nick had to admit he had been wrong about having a tracker on the team.

  ~~~~~~~~
The next few weeks had settled into a comfortable routine for Jas....well as comfortable as the wastelands would allow. For every two days they were working, they were off two days and every other weekend. She was grateful that here there were four teams, that way no one team was exhausted. On her days off, Jas helped with the daily chores and began to build relationships with her teammates, especially Nick and Greg.  The three would hang out together and shoot pool in the lounge or share their dreams with each other. Little did Jas know, but this close friendship with these two men change her life drastically.
One night they had been assigned to demo a building and as usual the team split into pairs. Jas and Nick were to set the weaker charges on the second floor while Warrick and Greg placed the major ones on the ground floor. The ones Nick was placing while Jas watched his back would only weaken the structure, but the metal shards from the bombs would kill anything unfortunate enough to be standing near by.
Nick had just p laced his first one of the sweep, and turned to work his way further down the corridor when Jas heard a soft 'click'.
'Nick down!'
He didn't know what had happened, one second he was moving the next Jas was shielding his body with her own. Just as she knocked Nick down, the bomb exploded sending shrapnel into her back. Howling in pain, Jas prayed she wouldn't pass out.
Warrick and Greg heard the minor blast and Jas' howl, causing them to race to the aid of their friends.  When they reached them, they saw the large Wolfen laying across Nick's body, blood dripping off black fur.
"Nick, you with me, man?" Warrick asked as he helped his teammate to his feet.
"We gotta get her to Doc, now!" Greg felt the hard shaking in Jas' body as he attempted to help her stand, whines and whimpers were all that came from her.
Nick and Warrick placed themselves under each of her arms while Greg took care of any Freaks that were being drawn out by the fresh blood. Finally they had her placed her face down in the back seat of the Hummer, Nick watching her vital signs while Warrick drove as fast as he dared. They were in sight of the compound when Greg heard a more human like groan from her.
"DON'T LET HER PASS OUT!!! SHE'LL CHANGE IF SHE DOES!!!" Greg was screaming at Nick while firing the rifle.
Instantly Nick realized what was happening and whispered 'I'm sorry' as he pressed his fingers into two of the holes in her back. A pain filled roar left her, ripping through the hearts of the three men. Warrick hit his com switch with Catherine.
"Cath, we need Doc in the garage! Tell him to bring everything he's got!"
Catherine heard the growls and roars over the link.
"What the hell happened?"
"Jas got hit, tell him get his ass there now!"
Chapter 5
Doc and the rest of the team were in the garage by the time Warrick pulled in. Greg and Nick helped Jas crawl from the Hummer and stand shakily on her feet. Doc started an I.V. before Warrick and Greg aided in getting her into the elevator. Catherine and Hodges ran to the lab knowing they would have lots to do once Doc had finished with her. Nick stood looking at the blood on his fingers, realizing how much he owed her.
"Nick, what went on out there?" Gris was worried, but now was not the time to show it.
"I'm not real sure," he still looked at his fingers, his voice uncharacteristically quiet. "I set the first charge, then started moving down to lay the next one." He closed his eyes briefly before turning to face his old friend. "Next thing I know she's yelling at me to get down....then everything went to hell."
"Come on. We'll try to figure it out." Gris saw Nick staring at the elevator doors. "Doc has her now, you'll just be in the way....come on, son."
Slowly Nick followed him to his office.
~~~~~~~~~

Medic Station

"Strap her down!" Doc barked as Jas howled in pain.

Greg and Warrick did their best, but finally got the restraints on. Jas was face down on the exam table with her muzzle and legs hanging off the ends.

"I can't see a damned thing for all this fur." He began feeling through the bloody mess, finally finding entrance wounds. Some of which were starting to close. "Greg, give me a scalpel."

"Aren't you gonna sedate her?" Warrick asked as Doc opened the first of many wounds.

"He can't," Greg stated as the first piece of shrapnel hit the cup, "if he does, she'll change....and die." Greg fought the lump forming in his throat at the thought.

"Warrick, irrigate this area for me." Doc said as he parted the fur.

Gris' Office

"Think hard, Nick. Anything unusual happen?"

"Nothing. I set the charge, armed it and moved on. Nothing different."

Gris leaned forward in his chair, brows furrowed together in thought. "What was Jas doing?"

"Watchin' my back. Then she jumped me." Nick racked his brain to see if there was anything he missed, but couldn't find anything.

"It's possible there was a fault in the detonation switch, and she heard it. We 'll have to wait for the results from the lab. Looks like she saved your life."

"That's twice." Nick's voice was subdued with the admission.

"Go get cleaned up, then you can check with Doc on her condition."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medic Station
"I think that's the last of it," Doc sighed as the metal clinked on top of the small pile in the cup Greg was holding. "Jas is there any more?"
'No.' Her mental voice was sounding tired, but not as pain filled.
"You two get these to the lab, I'll finish up here." Doc watched as the men left, before telling Jas she could change. He had noticed that her wounds began healing at a rapid rate once the metal was removed.
With a tired sigh, Jas changed to human while Doc removed the restraints. The back of her shirt and harness was a bloody mess riddled with holes, some quite large. She lay still as he cut off her harness, shirt and bra, grateful that he had sent the others away. Jas relaxed as Doc washed her back with a sponge and warm water, feeling each and every healed over wound. The ones over her spine were still tender.
"You're very lucky." Doc handed her a hospital gown to put on as she set up. "You should get some rest. I'm going to recommend to Gil that you don't go out for a few days, pending another examination."
Jas had been gone for fifteen minutes when Nick ran through th e open doors. Seeing the bloody clothes and tray of instruments broke his last reserve.
"Doc? Is she....?" Tears pricked at his eyes.
"She's fine, Nick. I told her to get some rest." Nick turned and ran out, leaving Doc to shake his head and smile. "Young love." He picked up Jas' ruined things and bagged them before taking it to the lab.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jas' Room

Jas had dimmed the lights and was about to take off the gown and get some sleep when there was a knock at the door. As she neared the door, Nick's scent came to her; hard and laced with fear. She opened it and moved back to let him in.

"I needed to see if you were ok." Nick fought to keep from touching her face, his hand resting on her arm instead.

"I'll be fine, really." Jas had smelled his fe! ar, but was unprepared for the sadness she saw in his eyes.

"Can I see?" He saw the puzzled look on her face then softly added, "I just need to know."

Jas turned her back to him and began to untie the lacing holding the gown closed. She understood all to well what he meant, sometimes you just have to see for yourself that someone you care about is really alright.

Nick watched as the thin gown fell to the floor reveling the dozens of fresh pink scars. A couple of the larger ones were directly over her spine. He took a deep breath knowing that if she hadn't been there he would have died alone. Carefully he traced a fingertip across one of them and felt her flinch.

"Did I hurt you?"

"Some of them are tender." Her voice was as soft as his.

Nick leaned foreword slightly, kissing a smaller scar on her shoulder.

"Nick, what are you doing?" Her voice was nervous sounding.

"Thanking you for saving my life....twice." He kissed another one before kissing the back of her neck.

Jas shivered slightly at the unexpected softness and burning heat of his lips, the feel of strong hands holding her biceps. She gasped as the kisses moved to the left side of her neck, resting on her pulse point. Briefly, she wondered what they would feel like on her own lips, what his short hair would feel like under her fingers.

His breath fanned against her ear as he whispered, "In the wastelands....you learn to take whatever you're given today....there may not be a tomorrow."

Jas turned to face him causing their lips to meet. She gasped as he kissed her giving Nick the opportunity to deepen it. The feel of his tongue in her mouth was exhilarating as was the feel of his hands on her back and ass. As she ran her hands through his hair, Jas knew there was something that she should tell him....but for the life of her, she couldn't remember what it was. Nick broke the kiss and laid his forehead against hers. Jas smiled at him, her cheeks flushed.

"That was very nice," she whispered.

"Come with me and it will feel even better." His voice was inviting and tempting as he held her.

She laughed softly as Nick led her to the bed, where he pulled off his shirt and sat down, spreading his legs.

~~~~~~~~
Greg stopped at her door and raised his hand to knock. He wanted to let her know that everything was leading to a faulty detonation switch. And he wanted to make sure she was alright. Glancing down, he saw that the light in her room was dim and realized that either she must be in bed or getting ready for it. Deciding that it would be best to let Jas sleep, Greg went to his room and went to bed.
~~~~~~~

Jas looked at the man sitting on her bed and ran her fingers down his chest. She marveled at how firm yet soft Nick felt.

"You're beautiful," she smiled.

"No, darlin', you're the one that's beautiful." Nick's soft Texas accent, and his fingers lightly brushing the sides of her breasts, sent chills down her back.

"I am?"

"No one ever told you that before?" He smiled slightly at the confused look on Jas' face.

"Besides my parents and Gil? No."

"Well, I'm tellin' you now."

Nick's words were soft as he stroked the sides of her breasts which caused her to sigh. Taking one last look at her eyes, he closed his as he took a nipple into his mouth. Jas gasped hard at the feel of his inferno of a mouth sucked and his tongue swirled around the hardened nub. He spent several minutes worshiping each firm mound of flesh b! efore he pushed her back slightly and removed his pants.

Jas couldn't help but stare at the erection standing proud from the tangle of dark curls. It was thick and vein covered, the slit was already leaking from him wanting her. Slowly she removed her own pants, shy but needing his touch everywhere he wanted to feel her.

Nick wasn't sure what to expect with her not quite being human, at most he thought her pussy might be covered with a very thick growth of hair. Instead it was shaved clean.

"You shave, huh? I like that." There was a deep hunger in his eyes.

"New York was full of lice....didn't have much choice," she said joining him on the bed.

Nick pulled down the covers and held out his hand for her, almost bashfully she took it. He lay beside her, kissing her deeply as he stroked his hand up and down her body. Jas shivered from the sensations, wondering if he noticed the fluid that now coated her mound. He slid his hand down between her legs, letting one finger slip inside the hot tightness of her body. Nick smiled at the new flood of wetness, and the sharp gasps that greeted him.

She was very tight, making him think that it had been a long time since Jas had anyone and took his time getting her ready. Nick smiled as her body thrust back with each stroke until finally, he couldn't' wait any longer. He positioned himself at her entrance, and entered her with one steady thrust. At the feel of something deep inside her tearing, Nick realized his mistake.

Jas grabbed his biceps, willing herself not to cry out as the sharp pain lanced her lower body and tears flowed from her eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me? I woulda been more careful." Nick held still as he looked into her eyes, upset with himself that he hadn't thought to ask if she had ever been with anyone before.

"I was going to, but everything you were doing felt so good, I couldn't think." Jas smiled up at him and he laughed softly.

She stroked the sides of his face as Nick smiled back at her. Jas started to squirm slightly under his weight, causing him to groan and lay his face on her shoulder. Slowly he withdrew slightly, then pushed back in causing Jas to gasp. Her body kept the slow easy rhythm Nick had set, the pain she had felt had given away to deep pleasure. He kissed her deeply as his hands slid under her shoulders and her legs enveloped his waist, urging him for more.

Cautiously he built the intensity, and angle, of his thrusts until he felt an unusual heat building in his core. As Jas' groans became louder, Nick pounded into her. A bright white light surrounded them as they came. Nick leaned back his head to scream, but no sound came.

After what felt like an eternity for him, Nick came back to his senses ans saw that she had turned her face away and was crying.

"Jas? Did I hurt you again?" Nick felt like a complete bastard as he realized that he was still very hard, and slowly moving in her again.

"No. It's just....we're bonded now. Life mates." Her tears came harder as she placed a hand over her eyes.

"Would that be so bad? To be bonded to me?" Nick didn't know which hurt him worse, her words or the fact that his body was still making love to her.

Jas turned her head to face him with shock in her eyes. "You don't mind?"

"Darlin', I think you're just what I need."

Nick barely had time to smile at her before Jas kissed him fiercely as she rolled them over onto his back and began to ride him; Nick carefully guiding her movements as she experimented with her newfound pleasure.

A couple of hours later, Nick was propped up on one arm watching her sleep. She appeared to be having a nightmare. He placed a hand on her arm and told her it was all right, that he was there. The dream deepened and intensified.

"No..." Jas was sobbing. "Eric, Calliegh, help," she whispered. "H get him off me!!!" She set up shoving and pushing Nick away from her as she screamed in fear.

"It's Nick....it's Nick. I got you, you're safe now." He saw the terror in her eyes just before she held him tight, sobbing.

~~~~~~~~~
Greg awoke suddenly, wondering what had done it. He listened closely for the alarms, then heard a faint scream come from Jas' room. Instinctively, he grabbed the pistol he kept beside his bead and ran to her door. Switching the safety off, he opened the door quickly and aimed the firearm at her bed. The laser sight had settled between Nick's eyes. Greg saw that they were both naked and Jas was holding him tight. Nick motioned for him to lower the weapon and to come closer.
Nick saw his friend enter the room naked, with his mind set on protecting his team-mate. For a second he was afraid that Greg would kill him, thinking that he was the one hurting Jas. Nick breathed a sigh of relief when the younger man slowly lowered the pistol and walked to the bed.
Greg set behind Jas on the bed, and placed a hand on her shoulder. He was completely taken by surprise when she turned and held him tight.
"Please don't leave me, Greg," Jas begged. "Don't let him sneak up behind me again, don't let him." She cried on his shoulder as he reassured her he wouldn't leave.
"We got your back Jas, don't worry, we got you." Something inside Greg was saddened when she released him and lay back down between the two men.
Carefully Nick and Greg positioned themselves around her and held the trembling werewolf as she drifted back to sleep. Both men wondered what was in her past that would leave her in hysterics.
I meant to post before this, because you have melded 2 of my favorite (FAVORITE) worlds: CSI Nevada & The Wolfen.
My god, that's a dream I would have like to crash in on!
Wolfen is a book I read so many years ago, but it was so mind-boggling to me, that I absorbed everything in it.
CSI...and Nick & Warrick, and Greg, etc., etc.,*swoon*...major hot-bodies.
But there's so much emotional interaction between them, I bonded w them completely.
From early chapter:
Quote
Gris looked at his team and smirked slightly. "It would appear that our tracker is also a retriever."
Right on the money!  Yep, that's Gris!
Great stuff! Now they're life-mated...what next? Nickie's just a wee bit protective...
shoot, I didn't mean to make more work for you!
The book I read is titled The Wolfen, by Whitley Strieber, 1988.  I think the movie is based on this book.
If you haven't read it, you MUST, because it's so good.   He does a few werewolf books; damn good author.
Enjoy!
Chapter 6
Three weeks later, Jas and Catherine were on their rotation in the hydro garden. The two women had come to like each other. Their professions had left little chance for contact with other women, so the time and talk they shared were cherished. They were gathering vegetables when Catherine decided to ask Jas about the relationship between her, Nick and Greg. Hodges had given her some information and she wanted to get the straight facts from Jasmin herself.
"This may not be any of my business." Catherine paused as Jas placed an heirloom purple tomato into the basket and looked at her. "I've heard rumors about you, Nick and Greg."
"Oh really, what rumors?" Jas was curious as to what people were saying about them. Stories people told about her were rarely true and usually made her laugh.
"That you three are sleeping together." The shocked look on Jas' face did not go unnoticed. "Normally I wouldn't  mind....but Greg," she paused and sighed before continuing, "I don't want him hurt. I don't think he has a lot of experience."
"Who-who told you that?" The color had drained from Jas' face at the thought that someone was spying on her during a time when she would be most vulnerable.
"Hodges has to pass by your hallway on the way to his room. He's seen the both of them going into your room, naked." Catherine was expecting an outburst, but got a relieved smile instead.
"Sometimes the three of us do sleep together, when I need Greg that is." Jas raised her face to feel the gentle mist coming down onto the plants.
"Meaning?"
"I have nightmares...." Jas' voice trailed off as her mind replayed the terror and the scenes fell from her lips.
The Nightmare
Miami, two years earlier.
Jas was sitting at a picnic table with Calliegh, Eric, H, Yelina and Ryan. They were enjoying the afternoon sun while they ate gator stew. Jas wondered if this would make them cannibals by proxy. Freaks ate humans, gators ate the Freaks, and they were eating the gators. She almost laughed at the thought when Ryan put a hand on one of hers.
"Take a walk with me?" Ryan had a soft puppy dog look in his eyes when he looked at her.
"Sure."
Jas enjoyed the feel of his hand around hers as he led her to one of the docks. It was a rare day when they could afford a picnic and she enjoyed the feeling of family she had started to develop with these people, especially Ryan.
He held her in both arms and kissed her deeply. A kiss that had her moaning for his touch. Ryan pulled back slightly, tracing his fingers across her jawline, down to her chin.
"Stay here, don't take any more assignments. Stay with me." Ryan's voice was soft and love filled.
"Ryan, if I do stay, I don't know if our peoples can have children together." Jas knew from long intimate discussions that Ryan had wanted kids....lots of them. She didn't want to cheat him of that chance.
"I don't care about that," he said softly as he cupped her face in his hands, "I want you in my life. Always. I love you, my little wolf-girl." Ryan's heart nearly burst when she nodded. He held her tightly to his body and whispered, "Tonight we can make it official."
"I'd like that," Jas whispered back, excited that Ryan would be her first lover.
"Mr. Wolfe, Ma'am. It's time."  Horatio's voice was clear as he called them to the boat. It would be dark soon and it was time to leave for their compound.
Eric guided the boat to the dock and held it steady as the couple boarded. They began working their way up the canal when a monster of a gator slipped into the water to the left of them. The beast was twenty foot long, five foot across the back and weighed close to eight hundred pounds. As the monster moved closer to them, Ryan called a warning to Eric and Horatio grabbed his rifle. The beast accelerated it's speed and rammed the boat, knocking everyone onto the deck and Ryan over the side.
"RYAN!!!" Jas screamed as she reached out for him. "Grab my hand!!!"
Ryan reached out for her when massive jaws clamped down onto his body. The gator started the "death roll" slinging Ryan's body in and out of the water. Jas still was reaching for him when a small explosion nearly deafened her. A small, neat, bloody hole appeared in the center of his forehead just before Ryan Wolfe was taken beneath the water forever. Jas lay there in shock as his black hair disappeared. She barely felt the hand on her shoulder, or the words spoken to her.
"Jasmin, I need you to listen to me. Ryan was already dead. He would have done the same for any of us." Horatio looked into her amber, tear filled eyes and prayed that there had been another option.
Two Years Later
Jas stood in the grassy area between the picnic table and the dock. Eric and Calliegh were laughing and playing with their year old baby. She called out to them, but they couldn't hear her. Eric told his wife there was a storm coming and they should be leaving soon. Jas yelled for them to stay, but they acted as if she wasn't there and packed everything up as they got ready to leave. A wind blew behind her and she turned to face the canal. A large dark cloud came rolling in fast with nearly hurricane force. Something made her walk onto the dock, to the very spot that Ryan had kissed her when he asked her to stay with him.
Jas' skin turned cold as slow footsteps came behind her. The smell of swamp water and death froze her to the spot, unable to turn, scream or even breath. A wet, rotted hand slid around her waist, and foul breath fanned her left ear. A sopping wet, distorted voice whispered into her ear.
"Why didn't you save me, Jas? I reached out for you." The decomposed lungs drew in a water logged breath and roared. "I LOVED YOU!!!!"
Catherine reached out for Jas' hand, wishing she had a towel or something for Jas to wipe her eyes with. After a few minutes, Catherine asked if she would be okay.
"I donno if I ever will be. They, um, gave me a psych eval....and I failed." Jas lowered her eyes at the admission and Catherine moved over beside her, placing her arm around the drooping shoulders. "Dad took me to the mountains to heal up." She sighed hard, willing the tears to go away. "I passed it the next year, my first assignment back was New York." Jas blinked hard and looked into her friend's eyes. "Catherine?"
"Yeah..."
"Is it wrong for me to need Greg to watch my back while I sleep? To keep the nightmare away?" Jas felt like a child that had been beaten for doing something very wrong.
"No, it's not. If I had dreams like that, Greg would be the one I'd want at my back too." She pulled Jas into a hug and just held her there until a familiar voice intruded on them.
"Am I interrupting something?" Gris was glad that Jas had a woman she could bond with, but he knew that something was troubling his god-daughter and hoped that Catherine could help.
"Just girl talk." Catherine looked at him and smiled.
UHN!
Dreams have too much power.
For all that they occur while we're sleeping, unconnected to life, the after-effects are far-reaching.
I have a really bad feeling about gators.  They reduce man to an appetizer on the food chain.
Thank you, but no, I'll find another way to exit this earth!
Nick..George Eads....yes, I've man-handled him into my own stories..yummmo!
She is Wolfen, so she is apart from normal, conventional mores, I figure.
 The fact that team members are spending nights w her naked  can mean many things, not all of them obvious.
Have you read it??
Have you read Wolven yet??
It might change your whole perception...it did mine.
Thank you Silver!!!!  ;), I had the idea of her being involved with Ryan. My dream had her with Nicky, so what to do with Ryan? I had to kill him off and the Freaks would have been too easy. A more "natural" death in this story would be an accident, and there are gators in Florida....sooooo.....
Glad you caught the double edge nudity. Nick is naked for ovbious reasons, Greg I lumped into the group that a lot of my male friends claim to fall into. They sleep naked. When he heard Jas scream, his only thought was to protect her, not his lack of clothes. Since they've already slept together naked, it almost seemed fake for him to put on shorts or something.
Things are not always as they seem in this story. Jas is very good at what she does, but she is having serious issues with it, something that will affect all of them in the future.
I haven't got the chance to read Wolven yet. I'm seriously gonna have to look for it the next time I go to Barnes and Nobels. I've also read a wonderful werewolf series written by Patricha Briggs. The Mercy Thompson series....wonderful books.
Seven has been sent to be betaed, and I've just started working on 8. Hope you keep enjoying this one.  I loved your Nick in Three. Will there be another appearence by him?
A/N 2: The Alliance is a military styled group that was created to help battle the Freaks and to protect the remaining human population of America.
Chapter 7
It was the day before they were to do another sweep when Greg and Hodges were checking supplies. Hodges had just come back from seeing a woman on one of the other crews. He was feeling ten feet tall when he noticed Greg's slightly sour mood.
"What's wrong? Trouble in paradise?" The questions were harmless in intent, but Hodges was severely lacking of most social skills.
Greg glared at him before reaching out his right hand to touch the boxes he was counting. Hodges cocked his head slightly as he viewed the scars on his friend's arm and thought he understood the cause of Greg's unease.
"Nightmare's? Maybe Doc could give you something to help you sleep." The sideways grin only seemed to piss Greg off.
"Hodges, what do you know about it?" Greg's eyes narrowed as he stared at the other man.
"Nothin'," he held up his hands, hoping to ward off the outburst that was brewing. "You just look like you haven't been sleeping...."
Greg growled slightly. "My sleeping, or lack of, is my business."
"Hodges, Cath needs you to help her recalibrate some of the sensors." Nick sensed the thick tension as he walked into the room.
Hodges turned to exit the room, grateful for the intervention. He paused to take a breath as if to say something else, then shook his head, wondering what he had said wrong then left.
Nick closed the door, then looked at Greg who was writing down the inventory. "What's wrong, man?"
"What makes you think somethings wrong?" Tension rose in his voice.
"I know you, man. You still laugh and cut up with us....but it's not the same. You've been tensed up the last couple of weeks. I don't think anyone's noticed it 'cept for Jas and me."
At the mention of Jas' name, Greg grabbed Nick and slammed him against the door, raging at him.
"WHY HER!?! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO FUCK HER!?! YOU HAVE ALL THE OTHER WOMEN IN VEGAS, WHY THE HELL DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE HER!?!" Greg let go of his friend, and leaned back against the racks, sliding down them whispering, "Why Jas?"
Nick stared at him in surprise, in the twelve years he'd known Greg, he had never acted that way. He realized in that moment, as he looked at Greg with tears on his face, that Greg loved Jas. Nick sat down on the floor in front of him as he spoke quietly.
"Greg, you probably won't believe me....but I didn't plan on doing this." He waited as Greg slowly raised his head. "I didn't know you felt this way about her, hell I didn't even know I did." He paused to take a cleansing breath. "Not until I saw Doc holdin' her bloody clothes." Nick was relieved that Greg was hearing him out, giving him the chance to explain. "I just went to check on her that night. I'm sorry if I hurt you. But, man, I'm telling you the truth, if I had known then how you felt about her....I woulda walked out after I saw she was alright."
"You would?" Greg looked into Nick's eyes and knew that he would never intentionally hurt him.
"Yeah," Nick smiled at him. "Man, you're my brother. I love you and so does Jas." Nick looked at him with as close to a pleading look as he had ever used. "She needs you, you're the only one that keeps those damn dreams away. We both need you in our lives."
Greg looked into Nick's eyes and saw the sincerity and mist the was welling up there. He reached out his right arm and when Nick took it, Greg pulled him close and hugged him tightly.
"You spend some time alone with her if you want. May do you and her some good," Nick said softly.
Greg pulled back slightly and looked into his eyes. "You'd trust me with that?"
Nick smiled slightly as he spoke, "You're the only one I completely trust alone with her."
Greg stood, pulling Nick to his feet with him. "I won't betray you."
"I know....Now let's get ready to waste some Freaks tomorrow night." Nick was thankful that the problems with him and Greg were fixable.
"Copy that," Greg smiled back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At the same time Greg was ready to come to blows with Hodges, Jas was standing outside Gris' open office door.

"Gil, can I talk to you?" She felt tired and exposed, and it wasn't because of Hodges.

Gris looked up from his book and seeing the look on her face was instantly by her side.

"Of course, baby girl. What's wrong?" Despite everything he had seen in the last several years, when they were alone, he still called Jas by the childhood name he had given her.

Jas sat on the couch beside him. Gris placed his arm around her shoulders; she laid her head against his chest and sighed.

"I don't think I can do this much longer....." Her voice trailed off to a whisper.

"After everything you've seen in the last fifteen years....it's understandable. Jasmin, you're too young to have so much blood on your hands, even if it were for the right reasons." He hugged her tighter and kissed the top of her head. "There's so much of Amber in you, and not just physically. You have her tender, compassionate nature."

"Will you tell me about her?" Jas raised her head slightly as she spoke. "So much has happened since she died, I don't remember her very well."

Gris looked into the eyes of the woman that he wished had been his daughter and smiled. "She was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Amber had these soulful golden eyes, like you do. Eyes that could look into my soul without trying." He took a deep breath, and let it out smiling. "Her hair was long, down past her shoulders....and the color of deep, rich honey. When she was a Wolfen, she was the purest white I'd ever seen." He closed his eyes, not wanting her to see the tears that were starting to form. "So white it threatened to blind you. Amber had the most beautiful, warmest soul of any woman I'd ever met....except for you."

~~~~~~~
Warrick was doing his rounds, making sure everything was secure before turning in when he saw the light in Gris' office was still on. He was about to enter when he saw Jas laying on the couch asleep with her head on Gris' lap and a well worn Navajo blanket covering her body. Her left hand held his under her chin while the thumb of her right one was slightly between her lips. Warrick quietly walked towards them when he noticed tears on her face.
"She okay?" He whispered.
"Sometimes.....even Anubis needs her family."
This is Amber.
Um.  This makes me nervous.
Sounds like great man-bonding, but....there just seems to be too much opportunity for something to go wrong.
She thinks a little differently than they do, and they're both in love with her.
Great chapter, but short!  I can tell you're having fun with this, so go have more!
That's for sure! Somehow I think that geekyness is what makes him endearing.
Oh yeah. There is a huge opportunity for things to go to hell quick with these three, it's even gonna appear to be happening at some points. Lines and boundries have to be drawn. She does think and rationalize slightly differently, at this point she still has no clue that Greg is in love with her as well. It will be very interesting when she finds out.
Nick trusts Greg, and at this point he's willing to trust that his "mate bond" with Jas will stop any problems. Just wait til she comes into heat. There will be fireworks, and not just the good kind either.   :lolmao
As soon as Mike and the Pack give me some breathing room, I'll be back. Oh Silver, I do remember reading Wolfen in high school, like a hundred years ago. Gotta buy and reread it. Chapter8
Warrick and Catherine were laying in bed after he finished making his rounds. She eased her hands around her husband's body and began kissing his chest. After a few moments of not getting a response from him, Catherine knew something was on his mind.
"What's bothering you?"
"Hum? You say somethin', baby?" Warrick placed his right hand behind his head as he pulled his gaze from the ceiling.
"I asked what was bothering you. Normally you aren't....distracted." Her soulful voice brought a slight smile to her man.
"Jas." Warrick took a deep breath. "I don't understand it. It's obvious how Greg feels, and Nick is so cocky around women. I don't see her as the type to like cocky men."
Catherine smiled as she tilted her head. "You're wondering why she picked Nick over Greg."
"Yeah, I don't get it."
"Jas didn't see what we did."
"How could she not?" Warrick knew women could be confusing, but to miss something that was plain to him was beyond that.
"Simple, she wasn't looking for it." Catherine moved to lay in the crook of his arm, so that they were side by side. "She had someone she loved once, but he was killed." She paused slightly to choose her words carefully, not wanting to give away to much. "After that I believe finding someone else never occurred to her, and Greg is shy. I think he was afraid to let her see much."
"I'll buy that. Did you ask her about what Hodges saw?" Like Catherine, he didn't want Greg hurt either.
"She told me. It's completely innocent. Jas still has dreams about that day and for some reason Greg helps the nightmares not be so bad." She thought a minute then continued. "Maybe, Greg reminds her of him a little and somehow that helps."
"Maybe. A person's subconscious is a messy place." Warrick's mind now somewhat at ease, he decided it was time to take Catherine's offer on easing the rest of him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Slightly before dusk the next night, the team made their way through the city. They were heading toward an older part of their sector. As usual Warrick was driving, Nick was ridding shotgun, with Greg and Jas sitting behind them. The air that rushed over the old military vehicle cleansed and calmed Jas' soul, something that had been a rarity the last two years. She tipped her head back and breathed in. Drinking the wind as the Arabs used to say. People had always thought that statement came from their amazing horses, but really it came from the way Wolfen scented the air as they traveled.

She could smell a storm coming in. A big one.  When Warrick stopped, she jumped out and raised her nose to the air. Along with the rain, she smelled Freaks in the old church type building to their right. According to the very faded sign, it had once been a wedding chapel. Jas could imagine countless couples getting married there and being happy for a while....at least until the plague and the Freaks came into light. Thinking of her mother and Ryan, her rage took a life of it's own. She shifted and stormed the chapel without waiting for the team.

"Jas! God dammit!" Nick bellowed after her.

The three men raced after her, but when they had caught up to her, the battle had already started. They stared at the wild abandon of their teammate. Eyes glowing and roaring a sound that could only be described as a mixture of sheep bleating and a cougar's scream. It was a sound that raised the hair on the back of their necks. Jas slashed wildly at the Freaks, disemboweling one while reaching for another.

The momentary shock wore off and they joined her fight, shooting Freaks while the storm rolled in. The men began firing their rifles as their battle training took over. Jas on the other hand was out of control. Ripping and dismembering her enemies, even going so far as to grab one by the back of it's neck and shaking it like a dog with a rat. Suddenly they all screeched and fled into the darkness. Jas raised her nose and growled just as the wind sent a sign through a window beside Nick. She raced outside leaving her teammates to follow in her wake once more.

They saw her standing in front of the chapel, with the wind whipping her fur. Nick was about to chew her out for entering a combat zone without waiting for backup when he saw what she was looking at. A massive storm carrying rain and sand in front of it.

"Oh shit! We gotta modoc!" Greg yelled over the wind.

Jas turned and raced away, back towards the compound as her friends jumped into the Hummer and followed.

"Gonna have to have a long talk with that woman," Nick snarled, but inside he was amazed at the speed that she was keeping. A head of them, but close enough to come back if they needed help.

The three men all knew it was going to be a bad storm with the Freaks running for cover, and greatful that  their living quarters were under ground.  The gate opened and the team entered, except for Jas who turned and ran back towards the storm. Nick stood up and screamed after her, his words blew back into his face by the wind.

Jas ran to a nearby building and quickly scaled the side and sat on the roof of the small building that had once been some type of store. She turned her face to the coming storm. She thought of her mother, of Greg's lost family and of loosing Ryan. Raising her muzzle, she let loose a greif filled howl that echoed back to the closing elevator of the compound.

And again, I love Warrick and Catherine so much!!!!!  I miss him terribly and I like the fact that you made them a couple, the way it should have been done in the show, IMO...

I was wondering, are we gonna see some Dr. Ray in here????

I agree. I think Catherine and Warrick should have hooked up in the show. Ray and Sara will be here, but in later chapters. There's twists and turns and at least one surprise yet to come.

chapter 9

Gil was waiting on them as the team exited the elevator. Upon seeing Jas was missing, his gaze went steely and ordered his entire team into the ready room. Wolfen or not. Team member or not, Jas was his goddaughter and he wanted answers. Now.

"I'm just gonna ask this one time, where the hell is Jas?" He fought to keep it professional, but knowing the storm was going to have them locked down for two days. Gil was loosing his battle. Jas and her father were his only family. "Nick, I'm waiting."

Nick locked eyes with his superior and told what happened. After he told about her racing back into the storm when they entered the compound, Nick's next words shocked his teammates.

"Jas isn't even human, she's a fuckin' Wolfen. She'll survive or not." With that he slammed his hands onto the table and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

The rest of the team stared at each other in shocked silence....except for Greg, who looked at the door with rage in his eyes. If Nick didn't care if she survived or not, he did. Gil watched the whole scene carefully before dismissing the team, with one exception.

"Greg, my office in thirty minutes. If I'm not in there by that time, you WILL wait." Gil thought he had an idea of what was really going on, and the last thing he wanted was for Greg going on a one man crusade.

"Copy that," Greg grumbled before stalking out.

Gil took a deep breath and headed for the one area where he knew Nick would be, knowing that with the storm the roof would be off limits. He walked into the rec room, where Jas, Nick and Greg shared so many hours. Standing in the shadows by the door, he watched Nick rolling the balls from one end of the pool table to the other.

"Don't lecture me Gris, not now." Another ball left his hand and smacked a another one into a corner pocket.

Gil cocked his head and watched for another moment or two before speaking.

"When I heard Amber had died, I told myself those very words. I thought that if I looked at her as not being human, then loosing her wouldn't hurt so bad." He paused as Nick looked up to face him. "Of course I'd never say anything like that to Mica's face, and of course it didn't stop the pain. And I really didn't believe what I was thinking about her. Amber. Amber was the love of my life."

Nick's uncaring facade crumbled, and his voice cracked. "When did the pain stop?"

"It hasn't, son, but it got easier with time." Gil walked over to Nick and placed a hand on his shoulder. "But there is one major difference."

"What's that?"

"I knew Amber was dead, we don't know that about Jas. Like you said, she isn't human and that could be what saves her. She's a smart woman, Nicky boy, she'll find shelter somewhere. Once the storm stops and we dig out, we'll look for her. Just remember this, her people evolved in Egypt; if anyone can make it through this storm, it's Jasmin."

"I'm leading the search party."

"I wouldn't expect any different, get some rest." Now that Nick had been 'bandaged', Gil had the difficult task of defusing Greg. It wasn't something he was looking forward too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greg paced the floor of Gil's office. If he hadn't promised to wait for his supervisor, he would be pounding the shit out of Nick right now. He could feel the hackles on the back of his neck rise.
'How dare he? Nick promised me that he loved Jas! Now he says that she's not human and he don't give a fuck if she lives or dies? I'll kill him, I'll fuckin' kill him.'
Just then Gil entered his office.
"Gris, I swear."
"Greg sit. Now." Gil didn't raise his voice, but the tone didn't give Greg any choice to argue. "Shut up, don't say a word, just listen." He could tell Greg was at the snapping point. Nearly to the point of not being able to listen. "Greg I need you to focus on what I'm saying for a moment. I went through what Nick is a long time ago, with Jas' mother."
Greg looked at him with disbelief and listened to his story. An hour later Greg left the office with his anger spent and a new understanding of what Nick was truly feeling. As he walked to his room, he noticed that Nick's light was on and knocked. The door opened, and Greg saw how worried Nick was.
"I wanted to let you know that I'm here for you, man."
Nick sighed hard. "Wanna get a beer?"
"Yeah."
After grabbing a couple of beers, the two men went to the empty rec room and spent the next few hours talking, consoling each other and planning on what they were going to do, and where to start the search.
Two days later
Sand storms were fairly common in this war ravaged Las Vegas, as were the short, rain storms. The truly violent ones, like they just had, hit once every couple of months. Not enough rain to green up the desert city itself, but the man made storm drains remained either clogged with hard packed sand, or would massively flood. Fortunately for the human inhabitants, it left them uninhabitable for the Freaks. They might be part rat, but their human DNA couldn't survive those conditions for very long.
The team was very experienced at the cleaning up process, but today they were giving it everything they had. One of their own was missing. Nick and Greg were working nonstop, except for when Doc Robbins forced them to stop for water and salt tablets, which they were strictly instructed to take in the shade.
Doc had just returned in the old pickup from dumping out the sand where two of the other teams were working on a further removal. Everyone once more began filling it up. Greg stopped momentarily to wipe the sweat from his face when he noticed a figure, staggering towards the compound.
"Nick." He still wasn't sure if his eyes were playing tricks on him or not.
Nick raised his head at the sound of his name and looked to where Greg was pointing. He dropped his shovel and ran towards the person. He never heard Gil call for Doc to drive to the wounded straggler.
~~~~~~~~~

Jas had begun walking before sunrise, just at the last of the wind was taking it's last gasp. She didn't remember what had happened, and realized that she had been lost in the bloodlust that sometimes claimed her people. The only thing she could be sure of was that she was covered in blood. Some was hers, but most was from Freaks and she was grateful that none was from her teammates. Her eyes were matted closed with sand and blood. Jas was trying to navigate using only her nose.

Her strength was rapidly running out. She knew that the chances of reaching the compound would be increased if she were to take her Wolfen form, but it would also take her last ounce of strength to make the transformation. One foot in front of the other, one step at a time was agonizingly slower, but she would make it. She stumbled and thought someone was screaming her name. Two more steps and her body collapsed, but Jas never hit the sand she had struggled through.

~~~~~
Nick reached his wounded lover just a she fell unconscious into his arms. Carefully he laid her on her back and checked for a pulse, and said a small prayer when he found it. He didn't have time to check her injuries because the truck had reached them, and the team cautiously placed Jas onto a tarp, then onto the truck bed. Doc drove as fast as he dared while the team shielded her body from the brutal sun. Nick held her hand and whispered for her to hang on and that she was safe.
Once Doc had her on his table, he chased everyone out except for Gil. Carefully Gil placed warm wet compresses across her eyes as Doc Robbins began removing her clothes and cleaning her wounds. It still astounded him every time he witnessed her healing ability.
"How are her eyes, Gil?" He had given up on using the sponge on her and switched to the spray nozzle to cleanse her body.
"I don't think there's any permanent damage, so far it just looks like they're just matted up." Gil opened the lid of the one eye he had cleared. "I can't be sure without shinning a light in them, and right now that wouldn't be the smartest idea."
"I'll bandage them for twenty-four hours, then check them." Doc looked over her body with an educated eye, "It appears she's exhausted herself, possibly dehydrated somewhat as well. Some sun and wind damage, but that's healing now."
Just then Jas groaned.
"Jas, can you hear me?" Gil spoke softly, not wanting to trigger a shift in her weakened state.
"Yeess," she croaked.
"Do you know where you are?"
"Home..."
"Good girl. Doc Robbins is with me, can you answer some questions for him?"
"I'll try." Jas was relieved to be safe, and recognized the tender touches around her eyes as being from Gil.
"I know this is a stupid question, but I need to know how you're feeling physically." Doc was ready with a hypo of pain medicine if she asked for it.
"I'm tired and cold, and thirsty. So thirsty."
"You're probably cold because we had to remove your clothes. When you feel strong enough, we'll help you sit up and help you drink. Gil, would you get her a blanket, please."
~~~~~~~~

Nick and Greg were sitting in the waiting area being comforted and consoled by Catherine and Warrick, while Hodges was listening close to the door. Nick was sitting with his head in his hands while Warrick placed a hand on his shoulder, when Hodges came over to them.

"Someone's coming out." he said in a concerned whisper.

"Jas is going to be all right." Gil hid the smile at everyone's sigh of relief. "She's tired and needs to be taken to her room. It's mostly exhaustion," he looked directly at Nick and Greg, "her eyes are bandaged for now. Doc didn't want any more light exposure than necessary right now."

"But her eyes are gonna be fine, right?" Nick's eyes welled up with tears at the thought of his woman loosing her sight.

Gil nodded then looked at Greg and saw relief and curiously a slight lost look in his eyes. "Greg why don't you get her some mineral water and something light for her stomach and meet Nick back at her quarters?" He then faced the rest of his team. "It would be best if the rest of us got back to work. Worrying isn't going to clean the sand away, or do Jas any good."

Greg shook his head as if warding off demons of the past before heading for the kitchen, grateful for something to do. Everyone else followed Gil to the elevators to finish the clean up. Greg knew she would need something nourishing but easy on her stomach. They had some stew and bread. Once he had fixed a tray Greg headed to her room. He paused a her door and knocked. Greg was surprised to hear Jas' voice telling him to come in.

"Where's Nick?" He asked as he set the tray on the night table.

"I threw him out," she said with a sigh.

"You what? But why?"

Jas wanted to laugh at the confusion in her friend's voice, but she was too tired. "He stank, told him to grab a shower." She sniffed the air tentatively. "You do too," she said with a tired smile.

"Well," Greg said smiling as he set the tray on her table, "if you think you can stand my stench long enough, I got food and water."

"Think I can hold my breath that long." Jas tried to sit up  , then her cheeks flushed briefly with embarrassment. "Um, could you help me sit up, please?"

Greg gently helped her sit up. Even though he knew Jas' wounds were healed, he was being careful. He couldn't explain what he was feeling. It was something that went beyond male and female, beyond their close friendship. At times he had the strong urge to go to his knees and bare his throat to her. With these strange feelings, Greg wished his father was still alive to talk to.

He opened a bottle of water and handed it to her, only to see it disappear in a couple of swallows. Thankfully he brought several waters as well as food for both her and Nick.

"Take this one a little slower, willya? Don't want to call Doc down here to lecture you."

"I will." Once Greg had placed it in her hand, Jas leaned the bottle against her throat. "It just feels like that storm sucked all the fluid out of me." She began to drink again, but slower this time.

"And THAT, young lady, is why we always put electrolytes in the water when we bottle it." He smiled slightly then turned his head toward the door as it opened.

"Man, it's nice to feel human again." Nick walked into the room wearing a pair of sweatpants, his short hair still damp from the shower.

Seeing how tired Nick looked, Greg met him halfway to the door. "If you need me, you know where to find me."

"Ass deep in the sandbox," Nick laughed softly.

"You know it." Greg paused at the doorway and looked at his friends, smiling. "By the way, Gris said it'll take at least three more days to dig out, then it's our weekend off. And you know what happens after a dig out," he did a Michael Jackson-ish spin "Party Time!" Greg danced out the door, then Jas' voice called him back.

"Greg....thanks."

"Anytime mah dear. Nickle." He then bowed to them, slid out the door and closed it behind him.

"He's one crazy kid," Nick laughed softly as he handed Jas her bread which she attacked, complete with soft growls.

"Whoa, slow down darlin'. You're gonna give yourself a stomach ache. I think." Even with as much as he'd learned, Nick still didn't know if she would be like the farm dogs he had as a kid or a human when it came to bolting food.
"You're. Right," she said around a mouthful of bread, "I'm just starving."

"S'ok. When you finish, if you're still hungry I'll share my bread with you."

Jas smiled and began to eat slower.

When they had finished, they lay facing each other, both extremely grateful to be able to do so. Nick traced his fingertips down her cheek and thought about what he was going to say.

"Baby, I....I know this assignment ain't permanent. When it's over, let's leave. We can start over somewhere."

"Are you serious? This ain't something to go at off-handed."

"Every mission, I see you barely holding it together." He placed his hand over her mouth to postpone the cussing he would have gotten. "In the field, you're perfect. Never miss a step. But....I see you before and after, and I think we both know this will be your last assignment." Nick took a deep breath and tried to explain what he was feeling. "I hate this. The fighting, living like this. I'm a farm boy, always will be. I want us to have a chance to live before we die."

"But, Nick..." Jas was dumbfounded, "what about the team?"

"The team will be fine. These sandstorms, lately the other crews have been finding several Freaks dead, more than usual. You know Doc's been testing that Freak virus, I think it's gotta chance."

"One condition."

"Name it."

"Greg goes with us. This place, this life is killing him."

"I know."Nick sighed hard. "Been watching him die a little every day, every mission. If you hadn't suggested it I would have."

Wanted to let you all know that I'm working on the next chapter right now. Hopefully it wont' be so long til it's posted. Funny thing happened with this one. I was writing it in a notebook, lost it, found it, and lost it again. After nearly 2 years, I found it in the trunk of our car! It's now going down in the computer.
